Types-of-Computer - Chandra's Concept

Types of Computer

Types of Computer-based on the principle of operation;-
    >>Analog Computer
    >>Digital Computer
    >>Hybrid Computer
1). Analog Computer
All device which computes result through physical things is called Analog Computer. The results given by the analog computer will only be approximate since they deal with quantities that vary continuously. It generally deals with physical variables such as voltage, pressure, temperature speed, etc.
As: Barometer, Oddo meter, Thermometer, etc.

2). Digital Computer
All computing devices which gives result in digital form are called a digital computer. Digital Computers have increasing use in the field of design, research, and data processing.
As: Digital Watch, Digital Thermometer, Barometer, etc.

3). Hybrid Computer
A Hybrid Computer combines the desirable features of analog and digital computers. It is mostly used for the automatic operations of complicated physical processes and machines.
As: In hospitals ICU etc.

Types of Computer-based on configuration;-
>>Micro Computer
>>Mini Computer
>>Main Frame Computer
>>Workstation
>>Super Computer
1). Micro Computer
The invention of the microprocessor (single-chip CPU) gave birth to the much cheaper microcomputer.
They are further classified as:-
a). Desktop Computer:- It is also known as personal computers (PCs). They are usually raiser to use and more affordable.
The HP 9100A was the first desktop computer invented by Hewlett Packard in 1968
b). Laptop Computer:- Laptop Computers are portable computers. They are a lightweight computer with a thin screen. They are also called notebook computers because of their small size. They can operate on batteries and hence are very popular with travelers. The screen folds down onto the keyboard when not in use.
The IBM 5100 is the first portable laptop computer that was released in September 1975.
c). Handheld Computer:- Handheld computers or Personal Digital Computers(PADs) are pen-based and also battery-powered. They are small and carried anywhere. The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) was the first digital computer that started being developed by Professor John Vincent Atanasoff and graduates student Cliff Berry in 1937 and continued to be developed until 1942 at the Lowa State College ( now Lowa State University).

2). Mini Computer:- A multi-user computer capable of supporting up to hundreds of users simultaneously. The PDP-1 was the first minicomputer introduced by Digital Equipment Corporation in 1960

3). Main Frame Computer:- A powerful multi-user computer capable of supporting many hundreds or thousands of users simultaneously.
Mainframes are used in banking, airlines, and railways, etc for their applications.

4). Workstation:- A powerful, single-user computer. A workstation is like a personal computer, but it has a more powerful microprocessor and, in general, a higher-quality monitor. The first workstation is considered to be the XeroxAlto, introduced in 1974.

5). Supercomputer:- An extremely fast computer that can perform hundreds of millions of instructions per second.
As: Weather forecasting requires a supercomputer for scientific simulation, (Animated) Graphics, Fluid dynamic calculation, Nuclear energy research, Electronic Design, and analysis of geographical data.
